Some 9.1 percent of Koreans over 30 were suffering from diabetes last year, according to an annual survey of 230,000 adults by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.
The proportion edged up 0.3 percentage point since 2021 and the trend has been broadly upward over the last decade.
Some 91.8 percent diabetics in the age group were treated in hospital.
In major cities and areas with a predominantly young population, those diagnosed with diabetes cannot always be relied on to seek hospital treatment because many young people do not take the disease seriously.
But the KDCA said, "Diabetes ranked eighth among the causes of death in Korea last year. To prevent the disease, it is necessary to have a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight and waist circumference, and engage in regular workouts. It is also recommended to abstain from excessive smoking and drinking."
