Choo Shin-soo of the SSG Landers will retire after the end of next season.
"I discussed my playing future with the team. Manager Lee Soong-yong needed me and respected my decision to extend for another year," the club quoted him as saying Thursday.
"I'm willing to contribute to the team by sharing my experiences and thoughts as needed."
Choo, who earned W1.7 billion this year, signed for the minimum of W30 million and agreed to donate the entire amount to charity (US$1=W1,295). He will also serve as the Landers captain next year.
Choo has reportedly donated W2.4 billion to charity over his past three years with the club and plans to conclude his final season in style by giving away autographed jerseys, hosting special autograph sessions and supporting amateur players.
Choo made his Major League Baseball debut in 2005 and set various records while playing for the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers. He played in some 1,652 games with a career batting average of 0.275, posting 218 homers, 782 RBIs and 157 steals.
He has chalked up numerous records for an Asian player in MLB history but returned to Korea in 2021.
