Sales of hybrid cars have increased dramatically this year despite a massive media blitz focusing on fully electric vehicles.
Sales of hybrids and plug-in hybrids rose 42.3 percent this year, compared to a 35.2 percent rise for EVs.
The Korea Automobile and Mobility Industry Association on Monday said a total of 7.24 million EVs were sold worldwide from the January to September period, up 35.2 percent, but sales of plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids increased 42.3 percent to 2.8 million and 5.77 million.
Global EV sales quadrupled in just three years from 1.66 million in 2019 to some 8 million in 2022 but then slowed down this year, while hybrids took the lead. But the combined figures still mean a bigger proportion of environmentally friendly cars.
Greener cars accounted for 24.6 percent of global auto sales in the first three quarters, more than four times the 5.6 percent in 2019. Among EVs, Tesla and China's BYD led the pack with sales of 1.58 million and 1.1 million, while Volkswagen, Shanghai Auto and Hyundai brought up the rear.
But in the market for all eco-friendly vehicles, BYD took the lead with 2.15 million cars sold, followed by Toyota (2.1 million). Tesla (1.58 million), Hyundai (960,000), and Volkswagen (900,000).
