Norwich City forward Hwang Ui-jo will be excluded from the Korean national football team until he is cleared of charges of making a sex tape of a woman without her consent, the Korea Football Association said Tuesday.
Lee Youn-nam of the association's ethics committee said, "A member of the national football team has an ethical responsibility."
The 31-year-old athlete was booked by police earlier this month on charges of filming a sex tape with a woman without her consent.
The woman who appears in the video filed a police complaint alleging that he had secretly filmed her, but Hwang says the clip was consensual.
Despite the scandal he played in all six international matches from September to November, but public sentiment turned against him when he was booked by police on Nov. 18. He has since played in an Asian qualifier for the 2026 FIFA World Cup against China.
"In order for Hwang to return to the national team, he must be cleared of the charges," a KFA official said.
Hwang has been one of the national team's key players, appearing in 62 matches and scoring 19 goals, but the national squad could end up competing in next year's Asian Cup in Qatar without him.
