Pyongyang is arming soldiers in the Joint Security Area in the truce village of Panmunjom after scrapping a cross-border military agreement, Yonhap News reported Tuesday.
South Korean and U.S. military sources said North Korean soldiers there have been carrying sidearms since late last week. South Korean soldiers in the area remain unarmed.

Defense Minister Shin Won-sik condemned the North on Tuesday in a meeting of top military commanders, saying "any careless maneuver that undermines peace is the beginning of ruin."
Under the 2018 military agreement to reduce tensions, soldiers of both sides in Panmunjom went unarmed while on duty. If the North persists in arming its troops, South Korean soldiers could also be ordered to carry firearms again.
