The government will allow 165,000 unskilled foreigners to work in Korea next year to ease the labor shortage in hospitality and manufacturing.
Last year the quota was 69,000, rising to 120,000 this year. Small and mid-sized companies here have been suffering from a labor shortage due to the country's dwindling younger population.

Under the new policy, foreigners with E-9 non-professional work visas will be able to work in restaurants in Korea, which used to be limited to ethnic Koreans from China with H-2 work and visit visas or D-2 student visas.
E-9 visa holders will also be able to work in mining and forestry rather than only in small factories, farms or construction sites.
