Some 264,000 Chinese tourists visited Korea in September, up nearly 800 percent on-year after China premitted group tours to Korea again in August, the Korea Tourism Organization said Monday.
But that was still only about half of the figure in September 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.
The visible economic impact remains limited as Chinese tourists seem to have changed their itineraries away from mindless shopping sprees.
More visitors are coming as individual travelers rather than part of a group that is herded from one shopping spot to another.
Individual travelers are more interested in popular restaurants and sights that are trending on social media than loading up in malls or duty-free shops, leading to a drop in revenues for these traditional beneficiaries.
