Kia reached a tentative agreement with its labor union on Wednesday guaranteeing a huge pay raise in exchange for scrapping a clause in employment contracts that assures the children of long-term staff of jobs at the carmaker.
But the union retained another clause binding Kia to hire the children of workers who die while employed by the automaker. The decision reflects a Supreme Court ruling in 2020 that said it is legal to offer jobs to children of a worker who dies in an accident at work.
In return Kia workers will get a W111,000 pay raise, a 400 percent performance bonus plus W10.5 million, W250,000 worth of market vouchers and 34 shares in the company (US$1=W1,350).
The automaker will also offer a study program for 1,000 children of employees, hire 300 new workers by the end of this year and build a large new factory in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
