Korea started administering a new vaccine for the most recent COVID variant on Thursday for high-risk groups such as over-65s, immunocompromised people and patients with chronic diseases.
The vaccine, known as XBB 1.5, was specifically developed to target the current XBB variant and will be provided free of charge until the end of March next year. People between the ages of 12 and 64 who are not considered high risk can receive a shot from Nov. 10.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, no side effects have been observed in those who get COVID and influenza vaccines simultaneously. The agency strongly recommends individuals over the age of 65 get vaccinated, as there are concerns about a dual resurgence of COVID and the flu this winter.
People are recommended to get vaccinated only once as the new vaccine has proved to be highly effective.
