An aging apartment complex in Yeouido will be knocked down and rebuilt as 65-story residential towers with 2,466 units now that height restrictions have been lifted, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday.
The Sibeom apartment complex on the bank of the Han River, the oldest in the district, were built in 1971 and consist of 27 identikit mid-risers with 1,584 units. They were the first residential buildings built and supplied by state-run builders, and President Park Chung-hee attended the opening.

The city will lay out a park to compensate for the skyscrapers and make the most of their riverside setting.
A Seoul city official said, "Sibeom apartments have been a symbol of Yeouido, and the project is expected to spur the reconstruction of other aging apartments in the area."
