Recent news of Hollywood stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro becoming fathers again in their 80s has put the spotlight on male fertility, which normally wanes with old age.
But multimillionaires are different from ordinary people, and men are usually advised to have children when they are younger in order to ensure a smooth pregnancy and childbirth.
Song Seung-hun and Lee Tae-ho at CHA Gangnam Medical Center have published a report detailing the weakening of male fertility with age.
They compared the semen and reproductive hormones of young males aged below 35 and older men over 45. It shows clearly that sperm levels, motility and reproductive hormone levels decline in older men.
"Men are the causes of 30 to 40 percent of infertility in couples, but this is not easily identifiable, resulting in a relatively low awareness of male infertility," Song said, "Even healthy-looking men should undergo fertility tests before marriage."
The study was published in the latest issue of the Korean Urological Association's journal Investigative and Clinical Urology.
