Ryu Hyun-jin of the Toronto Blue Jays will return to the mound this week after a 14-month recovery from elbow surgery.
He will make his season debut in a home game against the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Tuesday.
"He's ready to roll," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said last Friday. "Push the 'Go' button and don't look back."
The left-handed starter has not pitched in the majors since a home game against the Chicago White Sox in June last year, when he left the mound after giving up three runs in four innings due to soreness in his left forearm.
It was the second elbow surgery for Ryu, who underwent the first in 2004 when he was in high school. His long rehabilitation period culminated with four minor league appearances this month.
In 11 seasons in the big leagues, Ryu has recorded 75 wins and 45 losses with a 3.27 ERA. He signed a four-year contract worth US$80 million with the Blue Jays in December 2019 and the ongoing season is his last one with the club. Therefore, he will need to impress for the rest of the season to remain attractive in the transfer market.
