Floods Cripple Capital Region

Roads and bridges were inundated by flash floods and power and gas supplies were cut off in Seoul, Incheon and many other parts of the country as a result of heavy downpours on Thursday.

Six trees and an electricity pole were felled by a rainstorm in an apartment complex in Seoul's Ssangmun-dong in the afternoon, causing a power outage to 2,123 homes in the area.

Forty-six residents in a low-lying area took shelter as a road embankment collapsed in a residential area of Yeonhui-dong in northern Seoul in the evening. A district official attributed the collapse to the weakening of the soil by heavy rains.

Access to trails along 27 streams throughout Seoul was blocked.
