The number of malaria cases is surging as more people engage in outdoor activities following the end of lockdown.
A total of 221 malaria cases were reported from Jan. 1 to June 23, more than doubling the 105 reported during the same period last year, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said Sunday. There were 115 cases in 2020 and 120 in 2021.
At this rate the total number of cases is on course to reach around 500 this year.
The number of patients with the mosquito-borne infectious disease stood at around 500 to 600 cases annually between 2017 and 2019. It plummeted to 385 in 2020 and 294 in 2021 during lockdown, but bounced back to 420 cases last year.
