"The Roundup: No Way Out," starring Ma Dong-seok, attracted 740,875 moviegoers on its opening day on Wednesday to top the Korean box office this week.
According to the Korean Film Council, including those who attended preview screenings, the crime flick drew 169 million viewers in the first two days of its release and is expected to surpass 200 million over this weekend, which is followed by the Memorial Day holiday on Tuesday.
The third installment in a series that began with the 2017 smash hit film "The Outlaws" took some wind out of the sails of the Hollywood blockbusters that have been dominating the box office here lately.
Shortly after the emergence of "The Roundup: No Way Out," "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" and "Fast X" slid from the top spots.
The impressive start of Ma's franchise series bodes well for continuous success after the previous installment, "The Roundup," became the first film to draw over 10 million viewers since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic when it was released last year.
The latest installment in the series deals with the story of a detective who fights a war on drugs.
