The Pacific island of Guam, a favorite vacation spot for Koreans, is bracing for typhoon Mawar.
The governor of the U.S. territory has told 150,000 residents to seek shelter and U.S. President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in the region.
Mawar, which means "rose" in Malay, is expected to intensify slowly over the next few days.
But the typhoon is unlikely to affect the Korean Peninsula after passing 760 km northeast of Manila, Philippines early next week, the Korea Meteorological Administration said Wednesday.
The U.S. National Weather Service warned the storm could strengthen into a super typhoon by the time it reaches Guam, according to some weather forecasts.
Wednesday evening's flight to Guam from Incheon International Airport was delayed, while the morning flight on Thursday morning was canceled.
A KMA official said Mawar's path remains changeable, so it could still head toward Taiwan or affect Korea and Japan.
