The entire country sweltered in record temperatures for the time of year on Tuesday.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the highest daytime temperature in Seoul reached 31.2 degrees Celsius.
May records were also broken in Gangwon Province -- Gangneung (35.5 degrees), Sokcho (34.4 degrees), and Donghae (33.5 degrees) -- as hot and dry westerly winds from China heated up as they climbed down the Taebaek mountain range.
The weather will also be hot Wednesday but feel sticky with humidity as hot and humid southerly winds blow from Japan and a migratory anticyclone moves to the southeast of the peninsula.
On Wednesday, morning lows ranged between 12 and 21 degrees and daytime highs will reach 23 to 32 degrees.
The heat wave will subside on Thursday as a low pressure front moves in, bringing temperatures down five degrees in central part and five to 10 degrees lower in southern regions with overcast skies.
