Eight out of 10 big Korean companies now have at least one female board member (US$1=W1,321), a survey shows.
The survey of 354 companies by Meritz Asset Management published on International Women's Day Wednesday finds that 110 or 81 percent of 136 companies with assets of more than W2 trillion had more than one female board member, up a whopping 30 percent from just two years earlier.
The proportion of companies without any female board members plunged from 70 percent to a mere 19 percent over the period.
In contrast, only 60 or 28 percent of some 200 smaller companies had female board members, slightly up from 23 percent.
"Overall, gender equality in businesses is improving, but midsize companies don't seem to have enough female board members yet," Meritz said.
