The websites of a dozen academic institutions in Korea were targeted by a Chinese hacking group last weekend.
The Korea Internet and Security Agency said Tuesday that the targets included the Korean Archaeological Society and the Korean Research Institute for Construction Policy. The 12 websites remained inaccessible as of Thursday afternoon.
The hackers identified themselves as "Xiaoqiying" (cavalry of dawn) and declared that they invaded the Korean Internet. They threatened cyberattacks on 2,000 Korean agencies, with KISA itself first on the list. Their motivation is obscure.
The Ministry of Science and ICT promised to keep a close eye on the situation to prevent further attacks.
