A fire that engulfed a slum in Gangnam led to the evacuation of 500 residents early Friday morning.
The conflagration broke out at around 6:30 a.m. in Guryong Village, the last remaining shanty town in the super-affluent district in southern Seoul.

About 900 firefighters, policemen and city officials along with a dozen helicopters were mobilized to extinguish the blaze. More than 40 dwellings burned down, but no casualties have been reported so far.
It took nearly four hours to fully extinguish the blaze.

Thousands of mostly poor and elderly squatters live in the village, which sits on private land earmarked for redevelopment.
