Starlink, a satellite internet network operated by American aerospace company SpaceX, aims to launch its service in Korea in the second quarter of this year.
The company filed an application early this month for a license to start its business here, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on Tuesday.
Satellite internet can reach places that terrestrial networks cannot, but demand for it is unlikely to be high here because Korea's internet service is already one of the fastest in the world and is available for mostly lower prices than Starlink.
Last year Starlink launched its service in Japan with a subscription fee of 12,000 yen (about US$93) per month.
An industry insider said, "Starlink looks to target companies that need on-ship and in-flight internet access rather than individual subscribers."
