North Korea imported over 30,000 tons of rice from China last month, the most in three years amid a worsening food shortage in the renegade country.
China's General Administration of Customs valued the rice shipments of 30,172 tons at around US$12.83 million. That is significantly more than the amount the North imported between January and October this year, which stood at 27,350 tons.
They increased despite a decline in the North's total monthly trade volume with China.
In the past couple of years, North Korea imported far less rice from China because it closed its borders in the coronavirus pandemic.
