The number of self-employed people without staff other than perhaps their family has risen to the highest level in 14 years as the minimum wage soars and freelancers enter the gig economy.
According to Statistics Korea on Monday, 4.34 million business owners had no staff in July, up 1.1 percent from the same period last year and the highest for July since 2008.
The figure has risen for 42 straight months, mainly because there were many new platform-based workers like delivery drivers, who are self-employed for tax purposes.
