Chungcheong, Gangwon Drenched in Heavy Downpours

Chungcheong and Ganwon provinces were hit by heavy downpours on Wednesday as storm clouds moved south from the capital region.

Homes and roads were flooded and utility poles fell. Some 210.1 mm of rain fell in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, 192.7 mm in Daejeon, 149.5 mm in Gyeryong, South Chungcheong, and 137.3 mm in Chungju, North Chungcheong on Wednesday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

"We remain alert as more rains are forecast until Thursday," a provincial official said.

Some parts of mountainous Gangwon Province suffered landslides.

Ninety-five campers were stranded in Gangneung as a nearby bridge was submerged in a stream.
