2 Korean Summer Blockbusters Fuel Box Office Resurgence

"Hansan: Rising Dragon" and "Emergency Declaration," this summer's most anticipated Korean films, seem to be living up to expectations, sweeping the box office over the weekend.

According to the Korean Film Council, "Hansan" topped the box office on Sunday, drawing 465,444 people on that day alone, followed by "Emergency Declaration" which attracted 324,860 viewers.

"Hansan" has attracted over 4 million viewers in less than two weeks since its release on July 27, while the cumulative number of viewers for "Emergency Declaration" exceeded over 1 million in less than a week.

"Hansan" is the sequel to director Kim Han-min's mega hit "The Admiral: Roaring Currents," which drew 17.61 million viewers in 2014 to become the biggest box-office hit in the history of Korean cinema. The epic blockbuster, which deals with the exploits of Admiral Yi Sun-shin during the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century, is also the second installment of Kim's planned trilogy.

"Emergency Declaration," which grabbed instant attention even before its release for its star-studded cast including Im Si-wan, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Lee Byung-hun and Song Kang-ho, depicts an unprecedented terrorist situation aboard an aircraft, requiring an emergency landing.
