Half of Korean households will consist of elderly people by 2015, Statistics Korea said in a revised projection Tuesday.

The country already began a natural population decline two years ago, and the number of smaller and smaller households will peak at 23.87 million in 2039 before it also shrinks.

By 2050 it will have dwindled 4.3 percent to 22.85 million. And if the average number of people per household stood at 2.37 in 2020, this will fall to 1.91 by 2050.

At present one in five households is headed by breadwinners over 65, but that will rise to one in two over the next three decades.

The number of single and two-person households will increase, while larger families living under one roof will dwindle. As of 2020, 31.2 percent of households in Korea were singles.
