Former President Lee Myung-bak was furloughed from prison for three months on Tuesday on health grounds after a year and seven months behind bars.
He has been serving a 17-year prison sentence for corruption and embezzlement in office.
The Suwon District Court suspended the prison sentence "due to concerns that a continuation of his punishment could cause drastic harm to his health."
Lee suffers from diabetes, bronchitis and other ailments and repeatedly went to hospital for treatment. He has been at Seoul National University Hospital since last week.
He must return to prison at the end of September, but there is speculation that he could be given a special pardon to coincide with Liberation Day on Aug. 15.
President Yoon Suk-yeol said earlier this month that it is "not right" for Lee to be imprisoned for nearly 20 years given the leniency with which other presidents have been treated.
