Korea to Form Security Partnership with NATO

    President Yoon Suk-yeol will meet with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Madrid on Tuesday on the eve of a summit of the Atlantic security pact.

    Yoon promised US$100 million worth of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and agreed to form a new partnership with NATO.

    "Korea and the NATO agreed to establish a new strategic cooperative partnership beyond military and security cooperation amid the Ukrainian war and multiple security crises," Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo told reporters.

    Seoul has already decided to establish a permanent mission at NATO headquarters in Brussels later this year, Kim added.

    On arrival in Madrid the previous evening, Yoon and first lady Kim Keon-hee attended a dinner for summit participants hosted by King Felipe of Spain.

    Yoon and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida talked for about three or four minutes. On the sidelines, Yoon is set to hold a trilateral summit with U.S. President Joe Biden and Kishida on Wednesday, the first such gathering since September 2017.

    Yoon is also expected to emphasize solidarity in a short speech at the NATO summit on Wednesday.
