As the coronavirus pandemic wanes, the number of foreign nationals in Korea recovered to more than 2 million in May for the first time in 15 months, the Justice MInistry said on Thursday.
The number of foreigners on short-term stays of less than 90 days stood at around 424,000, up 1.8 percent from the month before. Those on long-term visas increased 1.2 percent to over 1.5 million.
The number of foreigners living in the country had been rising since 2016 and reached a record high of about 2.5 million in December 2019. But with the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, it started to drop, falling below 2 million in March 2021.
