Korean has been newly included among second languages tested on Hong Kong's Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (DSE) or college entrance test from 2025.

This reflects the growing popularity of Korean in the territory. According to the Korean Consulate in Hong Kong on Wednesday, education officials announced they will include Korean in second languages for the DSE in addition to French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Spanish and Urdu.

Interest in Korean culture has increased sharply in Hong Kong, with Korean dramas ranking in the top five among the 10 most popular Netflix programs there.

The Ming Pao daily and other local media are prominently reporting news of Korean celebrities, while Hong Kong University has opened a Korean studies program and six other universities there are teaching the language.

In mainland China, 30,000 students in 280 universities are learning Korean, but the language is not included in the college entrance exam, which only includes English, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
