Pent-up demand for travel is set to fuel a busy summer holiday season for the first time in about two years since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The government has lifted nearly all lockdown measures and other restrictions as COVID-19 has become endemic in Korea.

Hotel booking app Good Choice said Tuesday that bookings of hotels and resorts near domestic travel destinations for the period between July and August have surged 3.7 times compared to a year ago.

People planning much-awaited trips this summer are booking hotel rooms an average of 52.3 days before check-in -- 3.5 days earlier than last year. Many have apparently decided to book early amid an anticipated travel surge.

The country's eased outdoor mask mandate has also led to an increase in demand for various outdoor activities.

Reservations for water parks made through Good Choice have surged 5.2 times on-year, while bookings for yachting and paragliding are up 2.6-fold. Airline tickets and rental cars are almost fully booked for the second week of July, the most preferred period for summer holidays.
