Korea Goes All out in Bid for 2030 World Expo

    SK chairman Chey Tae-won, who is the head of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, visited Paris on Monday to lobby the general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) for Busan's bid to host the 2030 World Expo.

    Chey told Korean reporters, "I am giving everything I have. Other leading Korean companies are also working hard to support the bid in their respective areas of strength."

    The expo typically attracts more than 30 million people from 200 countrie. Korea is pitted against Saudi Arabia and Italy for 2030.

    The host country will be chosen by secret ballot by the 170 BIE member countries in November next year.

    "The key is the competition against Saudi Arabia," Chey said. The Saudi royal family is lobbying particularly African countries with the promise of substantial investments if Riyadh succeeds and reportedly has the firm support of 80 member countries, while dozens more have made verbal commitments.

    Eleven major Korean businesses plan to spend the next 500 days lobbying for Busan's bid. Chey asked Samsung and Hyundai to tap into their experience successfully lobbying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and 1993 World Expo in Daejeon.
