Chinese actress Tang Wei is set to appear in a Korean film for the first time in 11 years, since "Late Autumn" in 2011.
She stars in "Decision to Leave" directed by Park Chan-wook, who won Best Director at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The mystery melodrama revolves around a detective who falls for the wife of the victim of a murder he investigates.
Tang plays the victim's wife, who remains unfazed by her husband's death.
"My character has difficulty expressing herself as she has experienced many hardships in her life. She can't express her true love and has to hide her feelings," she said at a press preview of the film on Tuesday. "I can't speak Korean. I just had to memorize all the Korean lines, so I felt that I was in a similar situation to my character."
Tang added, "In fact, I can't speak even easy Korean expressions. I just picked up some advanced expressions through the film. If I get the chance, I'd like to learn practical Korean and talk [with people]."
She said she found acting in a foreign language to be fun and a unique experience.
"I think love is experienced differently depending on one's age. So the film will feel different every time you watch it, and each viewer will appreciate it in their own way," she said.
The film will hit local theaters on June 29.
