Daily new coronavirus infections stood at 6,172 on Monday morning after falling to 5,022 the previous day, the lowest in about five months.

But health officials fear a resurgence of infections this autumn and winter, with cases rising to 100,000 to 200,000 again as vaccine immunity wears off and colder weather makes people more susceptible.

Some also warn of a resurgence this summer, when air conditioning creates ideal conditions for the virus.

The government is urging vulnerable people to get their boosters. So far, 64.9 percent of Koreans have had their third vaccine jab and just 8.1 percent their fourth.
