Korea Beats Chile in Pre-World Cup Friendly

Korea beat Chile 2-0 in a friendly match at home on Monday, ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November. The victory comes after Korea was crushed by Brazil 5-1 in last week's friendly.

Hwang Hee-chan of Wolverhampton Wanderers scored the opening goal in the 12th minute, dribbling to the left corner of the penalty box and netting a right-footed shot. In stoppage time, Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min converted a free kick earned by Hwang into a goal. 

After Chilean defender Alex Ibacache of Curicó Unido was sent off for a second yellow card in the 52nd minute, Korea had a one-man advantage and kept pushing to earn the victory. 

Son became the 16th Korean male player to join the FIFA Century Club, as the friendly marked his 100th international match. He made his international debut in a friendly against Syria in December 2010 at the age of 18.

Son scored his first goal for Korea in his third international match, a group match against India at the AFC Asian Cup in January 2011. He has scored 32 goals in 100 international appearances, becoming Korea’s sixth top scorer after Cha Bum-kun (58), Hwang Seon-hong (50), Park Lee-chun (36), Kim Jae-han (33) and Lee Dong-gook (33).

"We did a pretty good job as we played together as one after losing to Brazil. I'm grateful to be able to celebrate my 100th international match," Son said. "I was able to reach the milestone as I did my best in every moment. I will continue to do my best not to disappoint fans."

Korea will face Paraguay on Friday.
