The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a sentence of one year and six months in jail for ex-Big Bang member Seung-ri for procuring prostitutes, gambling abroad and other charges.

Seung-ri, who was jailed by a military court, will be transferred from Army custody to a civilian prison to serve his term until February next year.

He was convicted of paying for sex and procuring prostitutes for foreign investors in his nightclub business in December 2015 and January 2016 as well as embezzling around W528 million from his club, Burning Sun, and gambling with about W2.2 billion in Las Vegas between 2013 and 2017.

The scandal blew the lid on a toxic male celebrity culture in the nightclubs of Gangnam that knocked several teen idols from their pedestals.

Seung-ri was indicted in January 2020 and court-martialed because he had had been drafted in March of that year. He was sentenced to three years in prison at first instance last August. The appeals court upheld the verdict but reduced his sentence to 18 months in January.
