Looking at Phones in the Dark Can Damage Vision

Staring at your smartphone in bed in the dark can lead to serious eye problems, doctors warn.

A circulation failure of aqueous humor -- the fluid produced by the eye -- could increase pressure within the eye and lead to glaucoma.

Ophthalmologist Yoo Young-cheol said, "Using a smartphone for an extended period of time lying on your stomach in the dark causes the crystalline lens to thicken and dilates the pupils, blocking the secretion of aqueous humor and increasing pressure in the eyes. That could cause glaucoma, which could damage the optic nerve."

It also reduces the number of times people blink to adjust to the light, causing the eyes to become tense and dry, according to Yoo.

Instead he advises people to use their phones only sitting up properly in adequately lit environments.
