Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur scored his 20th goal of the season in the team's English Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday, marking the first time he has reached the milestone in a European league.
He scored the opening goal of their away match 56 minutes into the game, racking up the 90th league goal of his career. Spurs eventually tied with Liverpool after Luis Diaz scored 84 minutes into the game.
The feat came more than a decade after he made his European league debut with Hamburg SV in Germany's Bundesliga in 2010. He is the first Asian player ever to score 20 goals in a season in one of the five major European leagues -- in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Son is now two goals behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who is currently leading the EPL top scorers chart for the season. If he can overtake Salah in the three matches he has left until the season wraps up, Son will again make history, as the first ever Asian player to top the scoring in a European league.
Son is the 11th player to reach the 20-goal mark this season in all five major European leagues, and the only one to do so without a penalty shot. Excluding penalty goals, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski (29 goals), Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick (23) and Kylian Mbappé of Paris Saint-Germain (21) are the only players ahead of Son.
If his goal in the UEFA Europa Conference League is included, Son's total this season rises to 21, just one short of his record of 22 goals, set last season.
Son was also voted King of the Match on Saturday by fans for the 13th time this season -- the most along with Salah.
