Singer and actress IU donated W100 million to mark the 100th anniversary of Children's Day on Thursday, her management agency said (US$1=W1,265).
She made the donation to Childfund Korea to help children in need or those without parents or with single parents. The money will be used to cover their living expenses and tuition fees.
"By helping those in need, I wanted to pay back all the love and support that fans have given to me," she said. "I hope all the children really enjoy Children's Day and they dream of a bright and happy future."
Meanwhile, IU will head to Cannes later this month to attend the Cannes Film Festival. Her latest film "Broker," which is set to hit local theaters early next month, has been invited to the annual festival.
The film is already generating a lot of attention here as it was helmed by renowned Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda and features a star-studded cast including Bae Doo-na, Kang Dong-won and Song Kang-ho.
It portrays the unexpected journey of those whose lives are linked through a "baby box," where mothers who feel unable to raise a child can drop off their babies anonymously for adoption.
