Kim Beom-su, the founder of Kakao, on Monday resigned the chairmanship of the app giant.
Kim said a message to his workers, "I will explore new markets overseas" and added that going "beyond Korea" is "the company's mission as well as society's strong demand."
Kim will still head the team that is in charge of the company's future strategies.
He aims to broaden the company's overseas businesses by using Kakao Piccoma, its digital comic platform in Japan, as a springboard. Last year, Kakao launched its own blockchain business based in Singapore called Crust.
The company has been severely criticized for elbowing smaller rivals out of online businesses like delivery apps and then hiking prices and commissions.
