New daily COVID-19 infections hovered around 300,000 this week with the latest tally at 327,549 with 206 deaths as of Thursday morning.
Daily infections among the over-60s are rising at an alarming rate, from 37,676 in the second week of February to 207,648 in the first week of March.
The increase of infections among the over-60s is leading to a hike in the number of severe cases and deaths. The weekly death toll in the second week of February was 187 but surged to 541 in the fourth week. In the first week of March, it nearly doubled again to 901, and 94 percent of victims were over 60.

Experts warn that daily deaths could reach 300 to 400 in the foreseeable future.
Kim Woo-joo at Korea University Guro Hospital said, "Considering that most of the recent severe cases and deaths are among the over-60s, the sharp increase in daily infections will lead to a surge in the number deaths in one or two weeks."
