The wife of the ruling party's presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung on Wednesday apologized for sending public servants on her personal errands and using her husband's expense card for herself.

Kim Hye-kyung told reporters at a press conference at Minjoo Party headquarters, "As the wife of a public official, I should have been more careful to distinguish between private and public matters, but my actions fell short of expectations."

Kim already issued a statement earlier this month after a whistleblower revealed that she treated civil servants like her own and used the expense card for personal purchases when Lee was Gyeonggi Province governor, but decided to speak publicly as suspicions grew.

But she was evasive about the details. Asked how much of the allegations are true, Kim said, "I heard an investigation and audit are taking place right now. I will cooperate to the fullest and bear responsibility if I am found to be responsible."

"All of this is the result of my own carelessness and shortcomings," she added without elaborating.

The whistleblower said Kim's apology "did not seem genuine and did not get to the crux of the allegations."

Lee Yang-soo, a spokesman for People Power Party presidential candidate Yoon Suk-yeol said, "She didn't tell the truth about any of the suspicions. It was an incoherent apology."
