The four major presidential candidates are set to clash in the first series of their live TV debates on Thursday night.
Lee Jae-myung of the ruling Minjoo Party, Yoon Suk-yeol of the main opposition People Power Party, Sim Sang-jung of the minor progressive Justice Party, and Ahn Cheol-soo of the minor opposition conservative People's Party face off on KBS for two hours from 8 to 10 p.m.
All have been rehearsing frantically because they believe the debate could be a critical turning point in their attempts to win over undecided voters, who have little regard for any of them.
Lee, who is considered the most eloquent, hopes to focus on his experience as Gyeonggi Province provincial governor and desperately try to divert attention from a massive land development scandal as mayor of Seongnam. "Lee will win a superior position in the debate by putting forth practical policies," a campaign staffer claimed.
Yoon is expected to emphasize his "capability for policy implementation," aides said, while using his lawyerly skills to call out Lee over the scandal.
The debate was supposed to come after a one-on-one between Lee and Yoon, but that was canceled at the last minute due to disputes over debate rules.
