Korea defeated Lebanon 1-0 in its final-round Asian qualifier on Thursday for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The win moves Korea closer to securing its 10th straight ticket to the quadrennial sports event.

Korea is now at the top of its group with 17 points from five wins and two draws, moving ahead of Iran with 16 points from five wins and one draw.

If the third-placed UAE fails to beat Syria on Friday, Korea will qualify regardless of the remaining matches' results.

During first-half injury time, sliding behind two defenders, Cho Gue-sung scored off Hwang Ui-jo's cross. It was Cho's first goal in his fifth appearance in the World Cup qualifiers after making his international debut in a qualifier against Lebanon in September last year.

The Korean players pushed hard for a second goal in the second half but were blocked by Lebanon's defense.

Korea will head to Dubai, UAE to face Syria on Feb. 1. The match against Syria will be held in the neutral venue due to the country's ongoing civil war.
