The Gwangju Biennale, which was originally scheduled for next year, has been postponed until 2023 amid chaos among the organizers.
The organizing committee said Monday that the next event will take place in April 2023.
The country's largest art festival typically opens in September in even years, but the 2020 event was held in April this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and an internal dispute over the biennale director's misdeeds has forced it to postpone this year's event as well.
To make up for the hiatus, next year's biennale will last three months instead of the usual two.
There have been complaints that the biennale is too short compared to leading art festivals abroad. The Venice Biennale lasts six months and the Documenta art fair in Germany's Kassel for three months.
