Samsung has chosen Taylor, Texas as the site of its second U.S. chip plant, sources said Sunday. The announcement is expected early this week.

The Korean electronics giant plans to invest US$17 billion to build the chip foundry.

Samsung chief Lee Jae-yong flew to the U.S. last week and visited the White House to discuss with officials possible support for the factory and the role Samsung could play to ease a global semiconductor shortage.

It is unknown which White House officials Lee met.

Lee then flew to Seattle to meet with client companies Microsoft and Amazon.
