The government on Friday extended the current lockdown for another two weeks, as the latest surge in coronavirus infections continues after the Chuseok holiday last week.
That means groups of up to six people are allowed to gather in the capital region, while bars, nightclubs and other entertainment venues remain closed and restaurants, supermarkets and other public facilities can stay open until 10 p.m.
In the provinces, up to eight people can gather and entertainment venues as well as public facilities can stay open until 10 p.m.
Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said, "The government understands the difficulties and suffering that small businesses have been experiencing, but the current situation of infections is still too serious for the lockdown to be eased."
"The government will work to find ways to live with endemic coronavirus and return to normal, as the vaccination rate is expected to reach 70 percent" by the end of the month, he said, adding that this process would be handled in stages.
The government asked the public for its continued patience, as the coming weeks will be pivotal in easing the surge in infections.
