2 Million Korean Adults Barely Literate

      Some 2 million Korean adults lack basic reading and writing skills, a survey of 10,429 adults released by the Education Ministry on Tuesday finds.

      The survey takers gave participants a variety of texts such as newspaper articles and public documents to gauge their basic comprehension and math skills.

      Some 4.5 percent were found to have only the reading comprehension level of first or second graders, which projected on the entire population would translate into 2 million adults. The figure is down 2.7 percentage points from 2017.
