Genesis to Go Electric-Only in 2025

Genesis has pledged to roll out only new electric cars from 2025 and phase out combustion-engine models by 2030.

The announcement came at an event on Thursday laying out the future of the Hyundai-owned brand, which was launched six years ago. Hyundai chairman Chung Eui-sun said in a video message that Genesis is now recognized as a global luxury brand and "stands at the beginning of another bold journey" toward a "sustainable future."

As part of that goal, Genesis will have a lineup of eight electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles in place by 2030 and expand annual sales of eco-friendly cars to 400,000 or double this year's volume.

Genesis launched an electric version of the G80 luxury sedan in July and the small GV60 SUV, its first fully electric car, last month.

Hyundai said it aims to achieve complete carbon neutrality in all phases of production by 2035.

Genesis also unveiled some ambitious design features all future cars will have in common, including a "stage door" effect where the front and back doors open in opposite directions, swivel front seats and heated floors.

It also offered a peek at a flying urban car. Genesis Air Mobility in the U.S. has been set up to prepare for commercial urban air transportation starting in 2026.

Hyundai announces its own electric car plans next week. The automaker said late last year that it aims to make nothing but electric cars from 2040 for all major global markets.

The EU has announced it will ban the sale of combustion-engine cars by 2035, while the U.S. administration plans to have EVs account for half of new car sales by 2030. As a result, carmakers around the world are racing to ditch combustion-engine cars from their lineup.

Mercedes-Benz last month said it will go all-electric by 2030 rather than its earlier goal of 2039, while GM vowed to stop selling combustion-engine cars around the world in 2035. Volkswagen also aims for 2035.
