Don't Sleep with Your Phone

      Exposure to Smartphones and other electronics late at night and in bed has been linked to sleep disorders, which are a growing problem for many Koreans, young or old, as almost everyone has one now.

      The Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics recently published a comprehensive study about the use of electronics and sleep quality among children and youngsters.

      It found that in those who use their smartphones or tablets immediately before bedtime, sleeplessness increased 117 percent, loss of sleep quality 46 percent, and drowsiness during the day 172 percent.

      They also increased if the mobile device was simply put in the bed without being used -- sleeplessness by 79 percent, loss of sleep quality 53 percent and drowsiness during the day 127 percent.

      The phenomenon is being blamed on both stimulating content and the physical qualities of the blue light from screens that can disrupt the sleep cycle and the production of sleep hormone melatonin that takes place in the dark.

      This is also a risk for adults. For a good night's sleep, it is advisable to put smartphones outside the bedroom after 10 p.m.
